I haven't been an active member in the Harry Potter fandom in what seems like a very long time, which actually now that I think about it, is a very long time. But since we're coming to the beginning of the end of what I'm sure was a very important era for most of us. It's time to talk about it again.

My friend Shaina had a Yule party tonight. I got to see some people from UVM that I haven't seen in 6 months and even though we're not really the best of friends it was still fun. Shaina's an amazing cook and she made some delicious cider glazed pork and mulled wine. I love her for this stuff. My UVM friends are such dorks and I love them for it. None of them are involved in fandom but they love Doctor Who and Firefly and we had several Dr. Horrible sing-a-longs. There were also discussions of porn and how many sex toys we owned. Nothing new there then.

I somehow came out of the night with a handle of vodka and a pack of cigarettes. Something to get me through the holidays.

I'm slightly drunk, which is probably why I'm sharing this picture. I'm sure I'll regret it in the morning, but whatever. This is from like two years ago, before we were 21 and were forced to raid my mom's fridge.  That's my friend Eric in the background and this is one of the least scandalous pics from that night, which he made me upload and tag on facebook at like 3am. The next day he regretted it and made me take like half of them down, because you 'could totally see his penis.'

I still think this picture is AMAZING. If only because it's so ridiculous. Even if that boy pisses me off to no end, he's probably my soulmate and I love him to death. He'll probably always be my best friend.

I can appease him with Lady Gaga downloads and he responds with IMs that start with: "So I was blowing some guy" and then we're fine.

Day 19 → A talent of yours

I have a tendency to look at the clock when it's 4:20. Don't ask me why, it just happens. Even when the clock is wrong.

Pissing people off also seems to be a talent of mine, though that's really a symptom of my personality.

Day 20 → A hobbie of yours

I wish I had something awesome to share, but I'm pretty boring. To be perfectly honest, livejournal and fandom have always been my hobby. A hobby is something is something that's supposed to give you joy and happiness and LJ has always (mostly) done this.

I also enjoy drinking vodka, getting stoned and atheism. I love pissing people off with the truth. People hate me for it, but I feel better knowing I'm right.

So there's a weird story behind this picture. I've taken A LOT of British History classes with the same professor. Actually a lot of my friends from UVM and I have and he ALWAYS uses this painting in his powerpoints. So it's become an inside joke between all of us. Most of us left at the end of the Spring semester, so my friend who actually took that picture when she was in London last year, made up t-shirts from that photo with our professor's name and the years we had him on it. A couple of them showed up in his office wearing it and I don't think he quite knew what to say. He loves us though, really.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I watched The Maine live on Hurley.com tonight. I've been trying to see that band for like two years now, but my friends all suck and don't care. I love them. The crowd sucked beyond belief and I wish they were better. I'm surprised cause usually home shows aren't like that. Who knows though? Maybe Arizona really sucks that much.
They played all the old stuff from their EPs which I love beyond belief.
Jake from Mayday Parade has me obsessed with The Dangerous Summer now.
Drew Brody-The Ballad of Mildred Loving (Loving in Virginia)
Most songs just make me realize what an emo bitch I actually am. But this song gave me chills the first time I heard it. For those of you who know who Jay Brannan is, Drew Brody is the guy who produced his latest covers EP and who opened for him when I saw Jay back in July. This song is essentially about the interracial couple during the 60s who were basically the force behind changing the laws that made it illegal for interracial couples to marry. It basically shows how nothing has changed.
Day 13 → A fictional book
I just finished reading The Eight by Katherine Neville. If you like historical fiction, historical mystery or Dan Brown you need to read this book right now. Dan Brown gets a lot of attention for his brand of fiction, but this book is the original, which is why I bought it like five years ago. I'll be honest I am a Dan Brown fan, though I prefer Deception Point and Angels and Demons to his other books.
There are two timelines in this book so if you know a lot about the French Revolution, which I unfortunately do, it's a lot more interesting. Tons of historical figures from Charlemagne to Catherine the Great to Benedict Arnold make appearances. Truly fantastic.
Day 14 → A non-fictional book
Yes We Have No: Adventures in the Other England by Nik Cohn. I found this book when reading shelves one day while I was working at my local library. It sounded like something I would love and I definitely did. I don't even think this book is still in print and I'm pretty sure I was the only person to ever take it out, but some of my favorite quotes come from this book. It truly gives you a look at places in England that most of us would never hear about let alone visit. If you're an anglophile of any kind, definitely give a search for it.
Day 15 → A fanfic
My fandom recs look something like everything in the GK fandom and anything that [livejournal.com profile] the_slash_pile you need to be.
Broken Wings by Katica Locke
79 chapters of epic gay fantasy. This probably isn't for everyone and I'm not even sure it's for me. But I read this in like two days of pretty much non stop reading.
The God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek aka Chartreuse aka [livejournal.com profile] gomichan
One of the best novels I've read ever. It's a little fantasy, a little sci-fi, a little western, a lot gay and just amazing. Another one I read in a day. I'll buy it eventually, but for now it's available for free online. If you like your gay heavy on plot and action with minimal amounts of smut this is for you. Just read it. You won't be disappointed.
His fictionpress account where everything is gold. Especially Just Drive the Car and May's Ranch.
And if you haven't read Metaonia yet, you need to get on that.
Quinntessential by the milk bottle
Awkward roommate love. Angst and wonderfulness. I wish it wasn't a WIP but it happens. I need more.
I could rec all day, but I don't feel like searching for everything. I love [livejournal.com profile] the_slash_pile and you should too.
Post the first sentence from the first post of each month (but only the ones with substance - no Tweets, memes, surveys, etc.)!
Enjoy the highs, lows and insanity. Most of these sound ridiculous out of context.
January-OMG OMG OMG!! I canNOT believe it.
February-I can't deal with the personal crises of any more of my friends.
March-Something I never thought would happen has happened.
April-I've been letting Twitter update you all on what's going on in my life
May-Why do some fic writers refuse to use contractions when writing dialogue?
June-[livejournal.com profile] moetushie posted a link to a picspam that will seriously kill your brain over at [info]alex_skarsgard.
July-My friends and I just enjoyed a stoney ride to McDonald's accompianied by S Club 7.
August-Had to change my journal layout since the other one was hosted on another site and isn't loading for some reason.
September-If you remember all the computer woes I was having a month ago, well wait no longer I'm having them again
October-The only band that I'm really dying to see at this point is Bayside.
November-So I'm kind of obsessed with Every Avenue right now and they've just been added to All Time Low's bill in NYC on December
December-It's December 1st (when the fuck did that happen BTW!?), which I hope means Bradley James has shaved that thing off his face.
Since there's a year in review theme year. Go to thedailyshow.com and watch their decade in review vids. Absolutely hilarious and will remind you of things that you'd forgotten about and those you wish you could.
Seeing Jon Stewart perform stand up was one of the highlights of my year.
Days 4-8
Dec. 9th, 2009 12:29 am
Just catching up. I was in NYC all weekend without my computer and then I was just lazy Sunday night and yesterday. So lots of insanity today. Still haven't watched Merlin. I'll get to it tomorrow, maybe.
The weekend was fine. Weather was shitty all day Saturday. Sadly no snow, just rain. And there's nothing on the ground here. Boo. Almost makes me wish I was still in Vermont. We barely left the apartment. Got ridiculously stoned Saturday morning and then again that night. Two weeks without weed makes me crazy. Or whatever strain that was. All of my insecurities came out. I apparently have a lot of problems with The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Oh well.
Day 3-TV
Dec. 3rd, 2009 08:46 pm
Day 01 → Your favourite song
Day 02 → Your favourite movie
Day 03 → Your favourite television program
This is actually really hard to choose. If you asked me a year ago I probably would have answered with Torchwood, but since the complete failure that was CoE that's no longer my answer. I generally think that sitcoms are pretty awful. Most of them follow that pattern of ugly fat comedian who's not really that funny married to a gorgeous wife with their 2.5 children. Terrible. But two of my favorite shows of all time are both sitcoms. Thankfully neither of them follow that pattern.
The Big Bang Theory
I had this ridiculous hatred of CBS as a kid, nothing that was ever on that channel was good. I hated it all. I still hate most of it. But this show never would have survived on any other network I don't think. It wasn't last year during Christmas break that I decided to give it a shot. I instantly fell in love. This show never fails to cheer me up, not to mention the fact that it plays into just how much of a dork I am. The fact that I loved Johnny Galecki in Roseanne when I was a kid has almost nothing to do with it.
I'm not a part of the fandom for this show because I can't behind any of the ships. The only thing I can get behind is gay!Sheldon. I am however loving the old married couple vibe that Raj and Howard have this season. Howard with anyone kind of turns my stomach. Though I could happily slash both Raj and Sheldon with OMCs.
Have some clips:
Sorry for the lack of Encino Man in a loincloth )
And I have to mention The Golden Girls because I've been watching it since I was a little kid and I still love it. I can watch episodes over and over again and never get sick of them. I've probably watched the whole series over the last month or so and it's kind of shocking how gay this show actually is. Almost every episode something is mentioned and there's gay characters throughout. It makes me love the show and these women even more.
Offiically more progressive in 1985 than New York State. )
Day 01 → Your favourite song
Day 02 → Your favourite movie
My favorite movie for a long time was Love Actually, but then I heard about a little film called The History Boys. I watched it right around the time that I was starting to get obsessed with Torchwood and the slash and all things gay basically, so a movie with British boys, history and lots of homoeroticism was right up my alley.
If you haven't seen it, you're really doing yourself a disservice. I wish I could list all the amazing things about it, but it still makes me incoherent with its brilliance. And though I've never seen the play it's based on, I have read it and the screenplay to the film. I personally like the film canon better just because it fits with my OTP.
And all you fans of eye fucking with especially enjoy this one. :D The cast is truly fantastic and I really can't imagine anyone else in these parts. Something that makes me really wish I had seen it when it was on Broadway.
Here's the trailer:
I also recently had kind of an amazing experience. A lot of the movies I've seen in the past year haven't really done much for me. But leave it to Richard Curtis to make me insane about a movie. So I heard about The Boat That Rocked (or Pirate Radio as they've unfortunately renamed it here in the states) months and months ago and I had it download probably sometime in June or something but never got around to watching it. But a couple weeks ago I decided why not get really stoned and watch it. So I did and that experience will probably stay with me the rest of my life.
I'd probably love the movie anyway, just because of the brilliant cast, but I watched it and just fell in love. I wanted to live in this movie. That was probably the weed talking, lol, but I haven't been hit with a movie like that in a very long time. I've watched it probably 10 times since then and I still cannot get enough. Though nothing will probably ever replace that first experience.
On a RL note, everything with my friends seems to be fine. Apparently they were both really sick with all kinds of things I'd rather not experience and just not in the mood for socializing. A text or IM would have been nice, but whatever, I'm used to this. Off to NYC this weekend. I'm sure my tweets will be ridiculous. I apologize in advance and hopefully they'll be no peeing on benches by the East River this time.
It's December 1st (when the fuck did that happen BTW!?), which I hope means Bradley James has shaved that thing off his face. I wanted to wait until the beginning of the month to start this meme, so here we go.
Day 01 → Your favourite song
I couldn't pick a favorite song if I tried, but here are some I want to share. So I hate Miley Cyrus and the fact my friends make me listen to her. But I LOVE pop-punk. And this makes me happy like you would not believe.
The Fold-Every Band In The USA
Brand New could release a million albums and I will never love any song more than Play Crack The Sky.
And because we've all heard it a million times now and people keep asking for it on the music comms. John Farnham-You're The Voice
A Christmas Song. Jay Brannan-Christmas Really Sucks
And what could possibly be my favorite Lady Gaga song ever. It even beats out Vanity. Speechless
I could share music all day long, but I think this will do for Day 1. BTW the links for my Sendspace folders are in a sticky post on the first page of my journal. Ignore the dates, I add things all the time.
So I think I might start writing reviews and recs for the books and original slash fiction that I read. I read tons of the latter and am constantly downloading ebooks and since I'm not working or doing anything else productive I might as well share my opinions and the things I find.
Good idea. Y/N?
Borrowed this from [info]its_elaine.
You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating HIM/HER? Since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.
Please copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-Word-Answers seldom help anyone out.
Would you like to learn something about my life...? )
Okay I have to go shower and have some coffee or something before I have to go over to my Mom's and eat massive amounts of food for Thanksgiving. Which my hungover stomach will totally appreciate. I'm starving right now.
NEW QI TONIGHT!!!!! This excites me to no end.
Stole this from [livejournal.com profile] ermynee224 and edited to fit my family a bit more. No siblings or pets. I realized that I don't really like any female actresses while doing this.
This is turning out to be a waste of a weekend. Ended up drinking a bottle of white wine (hate it, want red always) and smoking the minimal and I mean minimal amount of weed I had left last night. I haven't heard from anyone all day even after I sent texts. I hate this shit. I wait all weekend to see you guys and a simple text saying nothing's going on is too much? Do I ask too much? I don't think so.
I've rewatched all of Generation Kill in the last two days. I thought going out would keep me from starting it over. Now I'm done with this I might just have to begin again.
