For some reason I decided the best use of my time today would be to watch the first season of Castle. I knew I shouldn't have done it.
It's so cliche it HURTS.
I hated Beckett within the first 15 minutes and things did not improve much. I'm all for strong female characters, but when you make them all the same it defeats the purpose. I mean really? They can't come up with something other than a dead/murdered parent? It's ridiculous. Not everyone becomes a cop because of that. You want to know why my mom became one? Because the men in the department didn't think she could do it. The fact that one of them was probably her current husband is another story. But she did it and at the age of 35.
Shows like this are the reason I don't do het anymore. Sure throw in some sexual tension between the leads. Everyone loves that. Wrong. I don't love that. You're insulting the audience. I know it's hard to believe, but we ARE smarter than that. I'd love to see one of these shows where the leads are both male or both female and then throw in that sexual tension. But I doubt we'd ever see that on American TV. But that's a different rant.
Maybe it's because I'm still bitter about Crossing Jordan, but that show took these cliches and made them WORK. Or Jill Hennessy is a better actress. I don't know. Her character was more unique, that's for sure.
I'm gonna start Season 2. See if things change any. The only reason I keep watching is because of Jon and all the guests who make me facepalm. Oh TV you make me laugh.
Oh and a funny tidbit. The actress who plays Castle's mom? Her name is the same as when my mom was married to my dad. It always makes me LOL.
EDIT: I completely forgot one of the biggest things that bothers me. This is supposed to be NYC. I know it's filmed in LA but come on! The fact that it feels nothing like New York takes me completely out of the show at times. There's no seasons, no weather, nothing. If you're gonna make a show that's based in NYC please fucking film it there. It will make a difference and we can tell.
